A new volcanic eruption just began on the French island of Reunion which has a population of approximately 900,000. Specifically, 11 fissures newly erupted at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano to the east of Madagascar, each feeding a distinct lava flow. These lava flows are continuing to expand in size, and are occurring within the volcano's southeast rift zone.
