Baltimore County firefighters rescued several occupants during a fire on the third floor of the Towson apartment building

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — Thirteen people were treated for injuries following a three-alarm fire at an apartment building on East Joppa Road in Towson, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

Videos posted to social media show numerous emergency response vehicles outside the Berkshires at Town Center apartment complex at 204 East Joppa Road on Monday night.

According to a social media post by the fire department, the fire originated on the third floor of the complex. Photos show several county engines hoisting their ladders toward apartment balconies for what the department said were “multiple rescues.”

Baltimore County Fire officials said the blaze was extinguished shortly after 8 p.m. and that its cause is under investigation.

Department spokesperson Lt. Travis Francis told The Baltimore Sun on Tuesday that paramedics transported more than a dozen people to nearby hospitals. The fire department initially said there’d been nine injuries.

All of them suffered non-life-threatening injuries like smoke inhalation, Francis said, adding that one person injured their ankle after slipping on the ice.

A representative for the Boston-based company Berkshire, which bought the Towson building in 2016, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
