37 Labour MPs have voted against scrapping clauses that affect universal credit, as part of the government's controversial welfare reform bill. One suggestion made by the Labour rebels against the government's welfare reforms is that taxes on wealthy people should be raised instead of cuts being made to the benefits system. Speaking to Sophy Ridge, Richard Burgon, Labour MP for Leeds East said: "Savings can be made to the welfare bill in a number of ways...look at the tens of billions of pounds that goes from the public purse, through the welfare system into the hands of large private landlords".
