During 2022, a destructive volcanic eruption nearly occurred on Portugal's populated island of Sao Jorge. Thankfully, magma stopped short of reaching the surface, but the nature in which the magma intrusion occurred has potential implications worldwide. Specifically, because as it stands, a similar type of mostly aseismic intrusion elsewhere in the world could easily slip undetected by volcanoes with only limited monitoring networks. I discuss what exactly I mean by this, and offer suggestions to prevent a "next time, but with an actual eruption with people potentially in a danger zone for an unexpected eruption". Note: This video's title is not talking about a next time on Sao Jorge specifically, but rather a similar scenario to what occurred at Sao Jorge in March 2022, except on a number of different non Sao Jorge active volcanoes elsewhere on the planet. I say this because in my opinion, Sao Jorge now seems to have a thorough enough monitoring network to prevent a next time. Note: In my opinion, the failed magma intrusion at Sao Jorge in 2022 is not going to ever continue its upward progress or erupt, meaning the island is safe to visit.
