During the media luncheon and preview at The Oasis Café at Solaire Resort Entertainment City in Parañaque, I got a taste of the magic to come. The chic glass-ceiling café, bathed in natural light, felt like an inviting escape from the bustle of Aseana. It was a fitting backdrop for an afternoon dedicated to imagination — where conversations about choreography and artistry flowed as gracefully as the dancers themselves. Guests were treated to a preview that hinted at the enchanting world Artistic Director Mikhail Martynyuk is creating for audiences this December.
Martynyuk’s Alice in Wonderland is part of Ballet Philippines’ 56th Season, and it’s poised to be a visually captivating and emotionally rich production. His reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale blends technical ballet mastery with comedic pantomime, making it both deeply artistic and wonderfully accessible.
The ballet follows Alice, the ever-curious young girl who tumbles down the rabbit hole into a world where logic bends and imagination reigns. Through inventive choreography, she encounters the White Rabbit, the eccentric Mad Hatter, the wise Caterpillar, and the fiery Queen of Hearts. Each chapter of her journey bursts with color, movement, and meaning — all brought to life by Martynyuk’s distinct creative vision and the company’s world-class dancers.
What sets this Alice apart is how it celebrates whimsy without losing artistic depth. Instead of lavish spectacle, the production charms through expressive performances, clever staging, and charming costumes that breathe life into Carroll’s curious characters. It’s designed to be an immersive experience — one that captivates both children and adults and leaves everyone rediscovering a sense of wonder.
According to Kathleen Liechtenstein, President of Ballet Philippines, this production reflects the company’s commitment to imagination, courage, and the joy of discovery. “It also reflects our deeper purpose,” she shares, “to bring Filipino talent and artistry to the forefront of the global stage, showcasing how collaboration between world-class artists like Mikhail Martynyuk and our homegrown dancers creates a uniquely inspiring expression of creativity and excellence.”
For Martynyuk, the ballet is more than a reinterpretation of a classic. “Through choreography, mime, and expression, we invite audiences to feel the humor, absurdity, and heart that make Wonderland so unforgettable,” he explains.
