Alex Eala’s Cincinnati Open Run Ends Against Amanda Anisimova

Alex Eala’s run at the Cincinnati Open has come to an end, but there is still plenty for Filipino tennis fans to be proud of.

The young Filipina battled Amanda Anisimova in the third round, winning the opening set 6-4 before the American fought her way back to take the second set by the same score. Anisimova then pulled away in the decider, winning 6-2 to book her place in the next round.

Eala looked in control early in the deciding set. She broke Anisimova in the opening game and quickly moved ahead 2-0. For a moment, it looked like the Filipina might be able to finish off another big upset. But Anisimova showed her experience, settled down, and responded with six straight games to close out the match.

It was a frustrating ending for Eala, especially given how she started. She played with confidence against a Top 10 opponent and showed that she could go toe-to-toe with one of the best players in the world.

For fans who have followed Eala’s rise, however, this match felt less like a setback and more like another important step in her development. Every time she takes the court against elite opposition, she gains valuable experience—and Cincinnati gave her another opportunity to prove that she belongs at this level.

Eala came into the tournament riding plenty of momentum. Her recent performances have established her as one of the most exciting young players on the WTA Tour, while her fearless style has quickly won her a growing following in the Philippines and around the world.

Against Anisimova, she once again showed fearlessness. She attacked when opportunities appeared, competed hard through long rallies, and refused to back down even when the momentum shifted.

The loss also highlights just how fine the margins can be at the highest level of professional tennis. Eala won the first set, but Anisimova adjusted and gradually found a way to turn the match around.

For Eala, the focus now turns to what comes next. At just 21, she still has plenty of time to develop her game and gain more experience on the biggest stages. Matches like this one will only add to that learning curve.

And while Filipino fans would obviously have loved to see her continue deeper into Cincinnati, there is no reason to lose sight of the bigger picture. Alex Eala is competing with some of the biggest names in women’s tennis—and she is proving that she belongs in the conversation.

The Cincinnati Open may be over for Eala, but her journey is far from over. If her recent rise is any indication, there will be plenty more big matches, big wins, and memorable moments ahead for the Philippines’ tennis star.
