This is down very slightly on 32,345 who were in British hotels at the end of March. However, today's figure is an 8% rise on the same point 12 months ago, just before Labour took office in July 2024. As a reminder, Labour has pledged to end the use of asylum hotels by 2029. In her Spending Review in June, Chancellor Rachel Reeves pledged £200m to "cut the asylum backlog, hear more appeal cases and return people who have no right to be here".
