Some dogs contribute to the household by providing companionship, alerting everyone when a delivery arrives, and graciously cleaning up anything edible that falls on the kitchen floor. Promise, the Australian Shepherd, appears to have decided she should be contributing considerably more. The talented pup has become an internet favorite for the remarkable things she can do alongside her human, Mary. But one video might have every exhausted dog parent wondering why their own four-legged roommate hasn’t been pulling their weight around the house.

Promise doesn’t just know how to fetch a toy or offer a paw. This dog can apparently tackle an entire household to-do list, and she makes some of those chores look suspiciously easy. In a hilarious video with millions of views shared by @my_aussie_gal, Mary appears to head off for the day while Promise stays behind. That’s when the Australian Shepherd gets to work, and her version of staying home looks considerably more productive than spending eight hours snoozing on the couch.

Promise Has a House to Run

First, Promise tackles the bed, using her mouth and paws to pull the bedding into place. Once that’s handled, she moves on to another responsibility that apparently falls under her job description: feeding the cats.

She carries their food over and carefully pours it into a bowl while her feline coworkers wait nearby. Anyone who has ever lived with a cat knows that keeping management happy should probably be considered one of the household’s most important jobs.

Then comes the laundry. Promise gathers clothes, carries them to the washing machine, and loads them inside, proving that the age-old canine excuse of not having opposable thumbs is becoming increasingly difficult to defend.

The kitchen doesn’t escape her attention either. Promise loads dishes into the dishwasher, takes out the trash, and continues working her way through a list that would make plenty of humans consider taking a coffee break.

There are still floors to clean, and apparently, Promise isn’t leaving those for somebody else. While most dogs might consider a few crumbs on the floor an exciting snack opportunity, Promise has higher housekeeping standards.

Even the Vacuum Isn’t Safe

Promise sweeps the floor by holding the broom in her mouth and pushing it along. Then she moves on to something many dogs would rather bark at, attack, or flee from entirely.

The vacuum cleaner comes out, but Promise doesn’t declare war on the noisy household monster. Instead, she grabs onto it and gets to work, moving the vacuum across the carpet like this is simply another item on her daily checklist.

By the end of the video, Promise finally settles down after what appears to have been an extremely productive day. When Mary returns, the joke is clear: the human went out while the dog stayed home and handled the household.

There is, however, one little detail viewers should know about Promise’s impressive day of domestic responsibility. That’s not quite how things actually work in their home.

Promise and Mary Really Do the Chores Together

Mary has clarified that the video was meant to be funny because she actually works from home. Promise doesn’t spend her days independently running the household while Mary disappears to work. Instead, the pair really do perform many of these tasks together. Another video shows what chore day looks like for the duo, with Mary and Promise dividing up the work around the house.

Promise can load clothes into the washing machine while Mary handles other parts of the laundry. They similarly work together on dishes and cleaning, turning ordinary household responsibilities into another activity they can share.

Mary has explained that even boring tasks can become more enjoyable when you’re doing them together. Promise just happens to be capable of doing a surprisingly large share of the work.

This Isn’t Promise’s Only Talent

Housekeeping is only part of what has made Promise a social media star. The Australian Shepherd has learned an impressive collection of behaviors through training with Mary, continuing a special tradition that began with Mary’s beloved previous dog, Secret.

Secret became known online for an extraordinary range of skills, including painting, playing instruments, doing yoga, sledding, and helping with laundry. After Secret died from leukemia in 2022, Promise eventually entered Mary’s life and began developing an impressive collection of skills of her own.

Mary has been careful to recognize Promise as her own individual rather than simply expecting her to become another Secret. What the two dogs share, however, is a relationship with Mary built around learning, communication, and doing things together.

For Promise, those shared activities can apparently include everything from training games to cleaning the house. Considering her current résumé, there may not be many household jobs left for her to learn.

Why Australian Shepherds Love Having Something to Do

Promise’s abilities are extraordinary, but her enthusiasm for having a job fits well with her breed’s history. Australian Shepherds were developed as intelligent working dogs capable of helping manage livestock, which required them to stay active and respond closely to their handlers.

That working background helped produce dogs known for being energetic, responsive, and highly trainable. Many Australian Shepherds thrive when they have regular opportunities to exercise both their brains and their bodies.

A “job” doesn’t have to mean herding sheep, either. Trick training, dog sports, puzzle games, scent work, retrieving objects, and learning useful household behaviors can all give dogs appropriate ways to put their intelligence and energy to work.

Of course, most Australian Shepherds aren’t going to wake up tomorrow and start doing the laundry. Promise’s skills are the result of extensive training and a close working relationship with Mary, while the carefully edited video turns an enormous collection of learned behaviors into one seamless day of housekeeping.

Still, the underlying idea is something plenty of dog parents can borrow. Training doesn’t always have to revolve around “sit” and “stay,” and teaching a dog safe, useful behaviors can become another way for dogs and their people to spend time together.

Meanwhile, Our Dogs Have Some Explaining to Do

Promise has set an alarmingly high standard for dogs everywhere. Once you’ve watched an Australian Shepherd make the bed, feed the cats, load the washing machine, handle the dishes, take out the trash, sweep, and vacuum, it’s difficult to look at your own sleeping dog quite the same way.

To be fair, most dogs already have important responsibilities around the house. Somebody has to monitor the windows, test every soft surface, investigate suspicious grocery bags, and make sure their humans never go to the bathroom alone.

Promise simply seems to have expanded the traditional canine job description. Mary may still be the one ultimately responsible for running the home, but she has something many people would happily accept: a four-legged chore buddy who genuinely seems excited to help.
