CHICAGO — At least 10 people were taken to five area hospitals after a fire broke out Friday at an apartment building in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, officials reported.
All of the injured were able to vacate the fire before firefighters arrived to the scene. The building is located in the 1500 block of North Karlov Avenue.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said three residents were taken in serious to critical condition and seven were taken in fair condition to five different area hospitals.
Fire officials believe the fire started in the basement before spreading to the upper floors.
