Typhoon Matmo makes landfall in South China’s Guangdong, more than 150,000 people evacuated. Typhoon Matmo, the 21st typhoon of the year, made landfall on the east coast of Xuwen County in Guangdong Province, southern China, around 2:50 p.m. Sunday. Maximum sustained winds at the epicenter reached 14 miles per hour (42 meters per second, a strong typhoon) at landfall, and the minimum central pressure reached 965 hectare pascals. China’s national commission for disaster prevention, reduction and relief initiated a national Level 4 disaster relief emergency response on Sunday in response to the severe impact of Typhoon Matmo on Guangdong and Hainan provinces, and assigned a working group to the disaster area.
