Daisy Bell is a landmark recording in the history of computer generated music and speech. Created at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the early 1960s, the experiment used computer speech synthesis to perform the 1892 song Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two), with John L. Kelly Jr. and Carol Lochbaum responsible for the synthesized voice and pioneering computer music researcher Max Mathews providing the musical accompaniment. The recording demonstrated remarkably early possibilities for computers to generate recognizable speech and music, becoming one of the best known experiments from the pioneering work being carried out at Bell Labs. Daisy Bell later gained an extraordinary place in popular culture after science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke heard the computer sing during a visit to Bell Labs. The experience helped inspire the famous scene in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey in which HAL 9000 slowly sings Daisy Bell while being disconnected, forever linking the song with the history and imagination of artificial intelligence.
