LANDOVER HILLS, Md. — One man was seriously injured, five firefighters were burned and a dog died in a house fire in Landover Hills, Maryland.

NBC Washington reported firefighters were called to the home in the 7400 block of Allison Street at about 7:45 a.m. on March 23, according to the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department.

The department initially received reports that children might be trapped inside, but after searching, crews quickly confirmed the children were at school when the fire started.

Firefighters found a single-story, single-family home with a basement and fire coming through the roof, the department posted on social media.

An adult man was found in the basement and removed from the home before being taken to a hospital in critical condition. Officials later said he was in stable condition.

While searching the home, five firefighters sustained minor burns and injuries and were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

“It gets really hot and really intense, but our people are dedicated to the mission, and when we were told that there were children in there, they kept moving forward to search the structure until we got the confirmation that they were at school,” Assistant Chief Bryan Spies said.
