While hiking through the woods, a group of hikers stumbled upon a large dog lying motionless on the forest floor. He looked painfully thin, and when he struggled to stand, it was clear something was very wrong. Despite his weakened state, the dog didn’t shy away—perhaps he knew help had finally arrived. The hikers quickly contacted Naida Shelter, and soon, the exhausted dog was brought in for urgent care.

They named him Taco. But no one could have anticipated the grim details that came with his diagnosis. Taco had suffered a serious cerebellar injury, likely from a heavy impact. His body was also covered in bite marks, and his teeth had been filed down. It became heartbreakingly clear: Taco had likely been used as a hunting dog, a tool rather than a living being.

At the shelter, Taco was unfamiliar with the comfort of mattresses and chose instead to rest on the cold concrete floor. The damage to his brain meant he would never walk quite like other dogs again.
