A new toothbrush that generates its own electricity while brushing reduced cavity- and periodontitis-causing bacteria better than a conventional nylon-bristled toothbrush, according to a study published in Science Advances. In a three-month trial involving 115 volunteers, the self-charging device improved plaque control, gingival inflammation, and bleeding compared with regular mechanical brushing.

The device works through piezoelectric monofilament bristles. As the bristles bend during normal brushing, they generate electrical charges. That electricity drives a chemical reaction that produces reactive oxygen species, molecules that can destroy bacterial biofilms on teeth. In laboratory tests, the generated reactive oxygen species effectively killed oral pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium associated with periodontitis.

To test the toothbrush outside the lab, Yanhui Lu and colleagues assigned the devices to a total of 115 volunteers, all of whom received the same brushing instructions. The researchers then analyzed samples from the volunteers’ mouths using gene sequencing and metagenome sequencing. These analyses showed that the relative abundance of several oral pathogens decreased in the volunteers’ mouths over the study period.

The findings suggest that a toothbrush requiring no external power source could add an antimicrobial effect to ordinary mechanical plaque removal. Dental plaque is a persistent problem because bacteria regrow on tooth surfaces after each cleaning, so the daily battle against biofilm begins again each morning. By combining physical debridement with electricity-generated reactive oxygen species, the device targets the biofilm both mechanically and chemically during routine brushing.

The reported improvements covered three clinical measures: plaque control, gingival inflammation, and bleeding, all of which fared better with the self-charged toothbrush than with conventional nylon-bristled brushes over the three-month study. The work was published in Science Advances on 4 November 2026 under the title “Self-charged toothbrush facilitates toothhealthcare maintenance,” with the DOI 10.1126/sciadv.aeg5744. The trial results come from a single study of 115 volunteers using the same brushing instructions, so broader comparisons across different brushing habits and populations would require further research.
