Mantooth’s portrayal of firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage introduced millions of viewers to the emerging profession of paramedicine

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Randolph Mantooth, the actor whose portrayal of firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage on the television series “Emergency!” helped introduce EMS to a national audience, has died. He was 80.

Mantooth died Thursday, July 9, at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, his brother, Donald Mantooth, told The Hollywood Reporter. He had reportedly been ill for several years.

Mantooth starred alongside Kevin Tighe, who played firefighter-paramedic Roy DeSoto, on “Emergency!” beginning in 1972. The series followed the members of Los Angeles County Fire Department’s fictional Station 51 and depicted paramedics providing advanced care in the field at a time when modern EMS systems were still developing across the United States.

The program is widely credited with increasing public awareness of paramedicine and inspiring many viewers to pursue careers as EMTs, paramedics and firefighters. Mantooth maintained a close relationship with the EMS community after the series ended, regularly appearing at conferences and supporting firefighter and EMS health and safety initiatives.

In 2012, the Los Angeles County Fire Department named Mantooth and Tighe honorary fire chiefs in recognition of their contributions to the fire service and emergency medicine.

Mantooth remained deeply committed to the EMS profession long after “Emergency!” ended. Most recently, he served as an executive producer of Into the Unknown, alongside fellow Emergency! star Kevin Tighe and actor and former FDNY firefighter Steve Buscemi. The feature-length documentary follows paramedics, dispatchers, flight crews and their families, offering an unfiltered look at the realities of modern EMS. Earlier this year, the filmmakers launched a Kickstarter campaign to help expand the film’s distribution and bring its message about the challenges, sacrifices and importance of EMS to a wider audience.
