The Garfield Township Volunteer Fire Department’s firehouse was destroyed, leaving members to see if the apparatus is salvageable

LINWOOD, Mich. — The Garfield Township Volunteer Fire Department station was largely destroyed in a fire on Oct. 29. A passerby spotted the fire and called the chief before dialing 911.

Fire Chief Bryan Neumeyer told WNEM the West Erickson Road firehouse suffered extensive damage and a roof collapse, leaving it unusable for the foreseeable future.

“Everybody is just at a loss for words, reaction and feelings,” Neumeyer said. “This is something huge for us. We’ve even had founding members stop by to see the fire department they built, gone.”

Neumeyer said the department’s trucks will need to be inspected to determine if they’re still operable, noting that one vehicle purchased earlier this year cost $780,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
