A Florida police officer has been separated from his department following an incident in which he repeatedly used a Taser on a man reportedly experiencing a medical emergency and became involved in a verbal confrontation with an EMS employee. Video of the October 25 incident circulated on social media, prompting an investigation by the Chattahoochee Police Department.

The incident occurred when EMS personnel responded to a report of a man experiencing a seizure outside a residence on Chattahoochee Street. The man, identified as Dwight Jackson, had reportedly been putting up Halloween decorations when he suffered a seizure and collapsed.

Jackson’s brother, Caleb Johns, called for medical assistance. According to Johns, the seizure lasted approximately ten minutes before EMS arrived.

Police Chief Michael Miller said officers were subsequently requested to assist EMS personnel who were having difficulty restraining what he described as a combative individual.

Sergeant Price responded to the scene. According to Chief Miller, Jackson physically resisted the officer and pulled on his body armor. Sergeant Price deployed his Taser seven times before taking Jackson into custody.

Jackson disputes the police department’s characterization of his conduct. He maintains that he was experiencing a medical emergency rather than intentionally resisting officers. Johns recorded part of the encounter on his cellphone. The video was subsequently posted on social media and attracted considerable attention.

A second video showed Sergeant Price engaged in a verbal confrontation with an EMS employee. Chief Miller said the officer’s conduct and demeanor toward the EMS employee failed to meet the department’s professional standards.

The department’s review also identified concerns about Sergeant Price’s use of force and body-worn camera footage. According to Chief Miller, the officer failed to record the initial encounter and use of force. A supervisory review of available footage also identified an additional use-of-force incident while Jackson was being transferred into the police department.

Jackson reportedly suffered another seizure while at the police station, prompting officers to summon EMS personnel. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

Chief Miller announced Wednesday that Sergeant Price had been terminated following the department’s review of the incident and the additional videos.

Jackson told WCTV that he was never booked into jail and was eventually released. He said he is considering legal action.

The department has not disclosed whether Sergeant Price will face criminal charges or whether an outside agency is investigating the incident. Here is a link to news video coverage of the incident.
