Whether you are shopping for a seasoned field ornithologist or someone who simply enjoys watching chickadees from the kitchen window, finding a meaningful gift for them can make a lasting impact for conservation. The best gifts for birders celebrate their passion and actively help protect bird populations across Canada.

To help you choose, Nature Canada has put together this guide featuring outdoor nature observation gear, life-saving window-collision solutions, triple-certified bird friendly coffee, and ways to give back to biodiversity protection.

1. Café AVIA Bird Friendly® Coffee: Sip and Save Songbirds

Did you know that standard sun-cultivated coffee destroys vital winter habitats for migratory songbirds? Café AVIA offers a delicious solution for the most avid coffee drinker!
Café AVIA is 100% triple-certified: Smithsonian Bird Friendly®, Organic, and Fairtrade. Grown under a natural forest canopy in Central and South America, these coffee farms preserve critical wintering habitats for Canadian migratory species like warblers and orioles.

The Impact: Every bag of Café AVIA purchased supports bird conservation programs across Canada and the forest canopy birds need down South, making it a delicious stocking stuffer that protects birds with every sip. Your purchase of this coffee supports Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly City program.

2. Feather Friendly® Window Marker Tape: Stop Window Collisions at Home

Window strikes are one of the leading human-caused threats to birds in North America, causing millions of fatal collisions each year. You can give the gift of safe flight and migration with Feather Friendly® DIY Window Collision Tape.*

Designed and manufactured in Canada, Feather Friendly® markers apply unobtrusive white or black dots onto exterior window glass. To human eyes, the dots blend into the background, but to birds, they reveal that the reflection on the glass cannot be landed on or flown too – preventing fatal window strikes.

The Impact: Easy to apply and engineered to withstand Canadian winter weather for up to 10 years, this kit instantly transforms any house into a safe sanctuary for backyard birds.

3. Vortex Binoculars: Crystal-Clear Field Optics

A great pair of optics is the cornerstone of any birder’s kit. Vortex Optics* (such as the popular Vortex Diamondback HD 8×42 or Viper HD) are renowned among birdwatchers for delivering crisp color clarity and exceptional low-light performance for all your bird observation (and nature) needs!

Compact, waterproof, and fog-proof, Vortex binoculars make spotting subtle field marks easy whether you are in a dense forest or along a foggy coastline.

The Impact: Vortex backs their optics with an unconditional VIP Lifetime Warranty. They will repair or replace the product for free if damaged, ensuring this gift lasts a lifetime of birding trips.

4. Gift a Donation to Nature Canada: A Legacy for Wildlife

For the birder and nature-enthusiast who already has all the gear, the most meaningful gift is a symbolic donation in their honor to Nature Canada.

Instead of physical clutter, you are funding real-world conservation. Your gift directly supports Nature Canada’s vital programs, including protecting critical bird habitats, expanding our Bird Friendly City network, and advocating for endangered species.

The Impact: You can send a customized e-card acknowledging your contribution, giving your loved one the joy of knowing they helped safeguard Canada’s birds for future generations.
