Maintaining a large property with multiple garden beds means spending countless hours tackling seasonal pruning tasks, and having reliable tools makes all the difference. I've also spent years growing and pruning hydrangeas – my favorite plants and the reason my friends and colleagues now call me the "Hydrangea Queen." With shrubs that flower on old wood, clean, precise cuts are essential, so I don't take my choice of pruners lightly.
Fiskars has been making quality cutting tools for as long as I can remember, and its 5/8-inch Cut Capacity Bypass Pruning Shears are exactly what I've come to expect from the brand. They're among the best garden pruners I've used, delivering clean, smooth bypass cuts that help minimize damage to your plants.
As a former garden center manager, I've sold and evaluated just about every type of gardening tool on the market, so I know what separates a good pair of pruners from one that's not worth your money. These affordable Fiskars pruners are available on Amazon, where they've earned more than 42,000 five-star reviews, and they're the real deal.

How I Tested Them
I reach for these pruners time and time again because they're comfortable, easy to maneuver, and capable of tackling just about any pruning task I throw at them. I've put them to the test on unruly rose branches, thick hydrangea stems, general deadheading, and cleaning up my perennials (I have a few too many to admit) in both spring and fall.
I've also come to appreciate the little details that really matter, especially during those marathon pruning sessions. The spring-loaded opening mechanism comes in handy because the blades automatically reopen after each cut, reducing the amount of work my hand has to do. Any tool with features that can help reduce hand fatigue is a win in my book.

Performance
The sharp, precision-ground steel blades are the main draw here. They're strong enough to handle branches up to 5/8 inch in diameter, yet the bypass pruning action is gentle enough for delicate new growth, helping minimize plant damage and promote healthier plants. Clean cuts really do matter, and these consistently deliver them.
One feature I've especially come to appreciate is the self-cleaning sap groove. It helps prevent sticky sap from building up and gumming up the blades, allowing for cleaner cuts and longer-lasting performance without having to stop and wipe the blades nearly as often.

Design & Comfort
Comfort is one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back to these pruners. They're lightweight, easy to maneuver, and the ergonomic handles feel comfortable even after extended periods of pruning.
They also lock closed, keeping the blades protected and making the pruners easier to store in a tool bag or drawer. It reduces the chance of accidentally reaching for an open blade – always a welcome feature when you’re working with sharp tools.
Anything I Didn't Like?
These pruners are designed as an everyday garden tool rather than a heavy-duty pair of loppers, so it's important not to ask too much of them. While they'll comfortably cut stems and branches up to 5/8 inch (16 mm) thick, anything larger is better tackled with a different tool.
The lightweight construction is another reason they're so comfortable to use, but gardeners who prefer the heft and longevity of premium forged pruners may find they don't feel quite as substantial. For the price, though, it's a compromise I'm more than happy to make.

Should You Buy Them?
I’ve handled a lot of gardening tools over the years, including plenty of pruners that cost considerably more than these. Despite their affordable price, the Fiskars 5/8-inch Cut Capacity Bypass Pruning Shears remain my go-to pruners five years on, simply because they work so well. With proper care, this pair will easily last you for many, many years.
If you need a comfortable, dependable pair of pruning shears for everything from deadheading and perennials to roses and shrubs, I'd happily recommend them. They offer exceptional value for money and are a pair I reach for time and time again.
How Do They Compare?
Gonicc 8" Professional Premium Bypass Titanium Pruning Shears
Offering a slightly larger 3/4-inch cutting capacity than the Fiskars, these titanium-coated bypass pruners are a great value option. The ergonomic handles and anti-stick sap groove make them comfortable to use during longer pruning sessions.
