The epicenter was in the Sea of Marmara, near Silivri district. That’s about 80 kilometers west of central Istanbul. The quake occurred at a depth of around 7 kilometers. The first tremor was at 12:13 local time. It had a magnitude of 3.9. The strongest shock hit at 12:49. A series of aftershocks followed soon after. They ranged from 4.4 to 5.3 in magnitude. Authorities reported 151 people injured. Most injuries were caused by panic. Some jumped out of windows or fell on stairs. No major damage has been reported. An abandoned building collapsed, but no casualties occurred. The tremors were felt in nearby regions. These included Tekirdağ, Yalova, Bursa, and Balıkesir. Many residents rushed outside in fear. Airports in the city continue to operate normally. President Erdoğan is closely monitoring the situation. He is in constant contact with emergency services. AFAD has activated its emergency response plan. Officials urge people to stay calm and alert. More aftershocks may still occur.
