Hundreds will walk 207 miles across New York this September, ending outside Marshall BioResources, one of the nation’s largest breeders of beagles and other animals for use in laboratories. PETA is proud to support the March to Abolish Animal Testing, joining participants at both the kickoff in Albany and the concluding demonstration outside Marshall’s facility in North Rose.

The two-week event begins with a rally on September 12, where PETA’s Senior Grassroots Activism Strategist, Matthew Braun, will speak and host an informational booth. The march concludes 14 days later outside Marshall’s gates, just steps from the cages of tens of thousands of animals who Marshall confines for shipment to laboratories. There, PETA’s Vice President of Laboratory Investigations, Dr. Alka Chandna, will rally the crowd of thousands against cruel and pointless experiments on animals.

Conveyor Belt of Torment

For decades, Marshall has profited from supplying animals, breeding them in squalor, and peddling them to the highest bidder—universities, pharmaceutical companies, contract laboratories, government agencies, or whoever writes the fattest check in the U.S. or abroad.

beagles in Marshall Farms Facility

Marshall isn’t a laboratory. It’s the conveyor belt of the animal experimentation industry. Tens of thousands of beagles, cats, ferrets, and minipigs are bred at its North Rose facility and sold to laboratories worldwide, where they are poisoned, mutilated, infected with diseases, and killed in experiments.

Video footage and whistleblower accounts show puppies confined to barren, feces-strewn cages as they eat from moldy feeders. Some have been found dead in their cages. Federal officials have repeatedly cited Marshall for failing to provide adequate veterinary care and holding animals in decrepit cages.

Why We March

Every year, more than 42,000 dogs are confined to barren cages and subjected to cruel and pointless experiments in U.S. laboratories. Almost none will make it out alive.

PETA’s undercover investigation into Envigo’s beagle breeding facility in Virginia led to its closure and the liberation of 4,000 dogs. Our work with a coalition of groups brought about the demise of Ridglan Farms’ beagle breeding operation in Wisconsin. Now, our exposé of Marshall is one front in our campaign to shut down this animal hellhole.

What You Can Do

Everyone is welcome to the march. You can participate for a day, several, on weekends, or for the whole route. Whatever suits you best. Volunteers are needed to amplify the message or sponsor meals and lodging. Information on the route and schedule, including a day-by-day map, is available on the March for Animals website at MarchforAnimals.org.

Regardless of whether you can attend, please urge the U.S. Department of Agriculture to revoke Marshall’s dealer license.
