La Roque-Gageac is an amazing medieval village built into a cliff, routinely voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. Nestled dramatically at the foot of a towering limestone cliff with breathtaking views over the Dordogne River, it features golden stone houses, troglodyte dwellings carved into the rock, and lush Mediterranean-style gardens with palms, cacti, and banana trees. The Marqueyssac Gardens near La Roque-Gageac, often called the "hanging gardens" of the Dordogne, were built in the late 17th and 19th centuries. Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle (Château de Castelnaud) was built in the late 12th century on a dramatic rocky spur (150 m/ 500 ft) above the Dordogne River, only 3 km across the valley from La Roque-Gageac. The castle changed hands multiple times between English and French forces during the Hundred Years' War.
