A major M7.7 earthquake struck Panama yesterday, creating a tsunami, and collapsing many structures. This marked the largest earthquake to strike within the country in more than a century, but surprisingly, it did not occur on a tectonic plate boundary. Today's video will discuss why this earthquake occurred through the opinion & analysis of a geologist. Thumbnail Photo Credit: Google Earth, Data SIO, NOAA, U.S. Navy, NGA, GEBCO, Image Landsat / Copernicus, Data LDEO-Columbia, NSF, NOAA. This image was overlaid with text, and then overlaid with GeologyHub made graphics (the image border & the GeologyHub logo). Note: The tsunami hazard from the initial M7.7 earthquake in my opinion has passed as of when this video was published.
