Thousands of fans were in the city centre when the incident unfolded with 27 people needing hospital treatment and two in a serious condition. Mr Rotheram said: "Once again the people in this city will come together and they have done and you saw by the reactions of just passers by that they wanted to help the people who had been injured. "And that's the sort of solidarity I've come to expect from this great city."
