A New London volunteer firefighter died after being involved in a crash while responding to an earlier MVC

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — A New London volunteer firefighter died in the line of duty on March 5 while responding to a motor vehicle collision in Stanly County.

New London Firefighter Christopher Rothmeyer was involved in a single-vehicle accident on NC Highway 8 near Baldwin Road in New London, north of Albemarle, WCNC reported.

According to a statement from the Stanly County Fire Marshal’s Office, Rothmeyer was responding to another crash when the incident occurred.

First responders from the New London Volunteer Fire Department, Stanly County EMS and Richfield-Misenheimer Volunteer Fire Department administered life-saving measures. Rothmeyer was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

Since 2016, Rothmeyer served as a first responder with the New London and Bethany Community Volunteer Fire Departments and Stanly County EMS.
