When it comes to temperature in Europe, there is absolutely no doubt — unless you are a complete idiot or outright liar (or both) — that this is not “just summer.” Europe is sweltering through its worst heat wave ever.

Like everywhere else on Earth, Europe has been through heat waves before. Way back in 2003 they endured the worst they had yet seen, one of the ugly consequences we expected from man-made global warming, causing the death of tens of thousands of people. But it was just the beginning; Europe suffered deadly heat waves again in 2022 and 2025, and now its worst yet.

In most places , temperatures of 100°F and more are uncomfortable, even dangerous, but locals cope with the fact that they are bound to happen from time to time. In Bordeaux, France, for instance, the temperature can certainly reach 100°F but such occasions are quite uncommon. At least … they used to be. Prior to the year 2000, in 81 years of record the temperature at Bordeaux got that hot (100°F) on 24 days, so on average it happened about once every 3 years. Since the year 2000 it has happened 48 times in 27 years, about twice a year. Bordeaux hit the mark 11 times in the year 2003 alone (the year of Europe’s first “super-killer heat wave”) and has already done it 6 times this year, despite the fact that this year isn’t over yet (it’s still June).

Prior to the year 2000, it never reached 104°F (40°C) in Bordeaux. But it did during the super-killer heat wave of 2003. Twice. It did so once more in 2019, twice more in 2022, once more in 2025, and five times this year. So far — this year isn’t over yet (it’s still June). Of course people are talking about it, and thank goodness Europeans are so much better warned and better prepared than they were in 2003.

But of course, climate deniers will be stupid enough, or dishonest enough, or both, to imply that this summer in Europe is just another summer, just “business as usual.” The worst of them might even soar to new heights of gaslighting, by suggesting that “Perfectly ordinary seasonal temperature swings are being repackaged with apocalyptic flair to keep the climate panic narrative on a steady simmer.” That is an outright lie; these are not “perfectly ordinary seasonal temperature swings.”

Unfortunately, when it comes to climate change, the president of the United States only listens to people like himself: stupid and dishonest.
