Covington Firefighter Terrance Smith spotted smoke while driving home after a 24-hour shift and alerted residents

COVINGTON, Tenn. — An off-duty Covington firefighter is being credited with helping save three people from a house fire.

Covington Fire Chief Richard Griggs said Firefighter Terrance Smith was driving home after a 24-hour shift on Feb. 13 when he spotted smoke coming from a residence. Smith went to the door, alerted the occupants and told everyone to get out immediately, WMC Action News 5 reported.

All three residents evacuated safely. Firefighters said the blaze started in the attic of the home.

The department praised Smith for his quick response, commending him for his alertness, dedication and continued commitment to protecting the community even while off duty.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
