Fifteen dogs and one rabbit were rescued from a property near Natchez, Mississippi, after deputies uncovered severe neglect and evidence suggesting possible dogfighting activity. The rescue was carried out by Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a national nonprofit animal protection organization, after the Adams County Sheriff’s Office requested emergency assistance.

The operation, known as “Operation Underdog,” began after deputies responded to the property in response to the 911 report. With no local animal control or shelter available in Adams County, ARC stepped in to provide specialized animal handling, collect evidence, establish emergency sheltering, and prepare the animals for eventual placement in loving homes.

A Rescue That Offered Hope After Years of Neglect

Rescuers encountered a heartbreaking scene. Many of the dogs were severely underweight, their bodies showing the effects of prolonged hunger and neglect. Some older dogs bore scars from untreated injuries, silently reflecting years of suffering without proper care. Several dogs were tethered by heavy chains, unable to move beyond small circles of barren dirt where the constant dragging of the chains had worn away every patch of grass. Their only protection from the elements came from makeshift shelters, including worn doghouses and plastic barrels that offered little comfort.

As responders searched the property, they also discovered equipment commonly associated with dogfighting, including bite ropes designed to strengthen jaws and suspended tires often used during illegal training. The findings added to the disturbing conditions already facing the animals.

The rescue also highlighted a significant challenge for rural communities like Adams County, where no animal control services or shelter facilities exist. Without ARC’s involvement, local authorities would have faced enormous logistical and financial obstacles in caring for the animals.

Sheriff Travis Patten praised the nonprofit’s support, noting that ARC covered every expense related to the rescue. By absorbing the costs of transportation, emergency shelter, veterinary care, and rehabilitation, the organization saved local taxpayers thousands of dollars while ensuring the animals received immediate help.

The dogs and rabbit have since been transported to ARC’s rescue center outside Nashville. There, they are receiving veterinary treatment, nutritious meals, and patient socialization to help them recover both physically and emotionally. Severely underweight animals can’t simply be given unlimited food right away. Veterinarians typically increase meals gradually because sudden overeating after prolonged starvation can cause serious medical complications. Careful nutritional rehabilitation allows their bodies to recover safely while rebuilding strength over time. Although they will remain in ARC’s care until the legal proceedings conclude, their days of isolation and neglect are finally behind them.
