Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayMount Pelee, yes the infamous Caribbean volcano, is currently producing an increased rate of ground deformation. In fact, this ground deformation in the overall year of 2026 seems to be occurring at its highest year by year rate since Pelee’s latest episode of volcanic unrest began in 2018. Today's video discusses what might be causing this episode of volcanic unrest. Note: This video's title notes that 2026 has seen the highest rate of ground deformation at Mount Pelee since its volcanic unrest episode began in 2018. However, this has decreased somewhat in the last month, and is predominantly horizontal rather than vertical in nature. Higher rates of vertical ground deformation occurred in prior years, albeit with lower horizontal ground deformation. I am not implying that September 2026 saw a rapid increase in or a record setting pace of ground deformation at Pelee…because it didn’t. Just 2026 has had a higher amount of ground deformation than any year since 2018 at Pelee. CORRECTION #1: Ok, so I just received an email due to a query I made to L'Observatoire Volcanologique et Sismologique de Martinique and there is vertical ground deformation (more than the negligible figure my video implied, although they did not specifically say this). They also stated that such figures will be posted in the annual volcano bulletin for 2026 when it is released. Presumably because there is some measurable ongoing vertical ground deformation, just in my opinion not crazy high levels of vertical ground deformation at Mount Pelee. While they quoted the vertical ground deformation as "significant", this statement in my interpretation is probably in regards to 21st century ground deformation baseline figures, rather than truly significant vertical ground deformation in terms of world volcano standards.
