WILMINGTON, Del. — Wilmington firefighters responded at about 9:28 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2025, to a reported cargo ship fire aboard the Liberia-flagged Chiquita Voyager, a 728-foot container ship at the Port of Wilmington carrying fruit from Central America.

Battalion Chief Eric Haley reported smoke coming from the ship’s superstructure and crews boarded to begin evacuation and fire suppression, locating the fire in the engine room.

A second alarm was struck to bring in additional resources, and after coordinating with the ship’s captain and engineer, crews activated the vessel’s onboard suppression system to contain the fire.

The incident was brought under control in about three hours, with units remaining on scene through the day to confirm extinguishment; the engine room was opened 24 hours later and the fire was declared out. Four crew members were injured and transported to Christiana Hospital, and about 70 fire and EMS personnel responded.
