LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s international search-and-rescue team has been activated to respond to Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the center of the country.

The team, known as USA-2, was activated by the U.S. Department of State and departed from the department’s Technical Operations facility on June 25.

USA-2 is sending 71 members, six canine teams and 84,000 pounds of equipment to assist with search, rescue and recovery operations.

The team will join Virginia Task Force 1, also known as USA-1, from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Members of USA-1 were also en route to Venezuela as part of the federal response.
