Security Bank Marks 75th Year With 7,500-Mangrove Target

The initiative brought together Security Bank employees, local communities, government representatives, and youth volunteers for a coastal conservation activity in Barangay Bungro. Participants planted nearly 500 mangrove seedlings toward the bank’s goal of planting 7,500 this year.

The activity highlighted the role of mangroves in protecting coastal communities and supporting healthier marine ecosystems. Mangrove forests can help reduce coastal erosion and provide important habitats for marine life, making their rehabilitation a key component of long-term environmental protection.

Project MITHI Combines Environmental and Community Programs

Project MITHI goes beyond mangrove planting. The program also includes environmental education sessions for children and financial literacy workshops for adult community members.

These activities reflect the program’s broader approach to community resilience. By combining environmental awareness with practical financial knowledge, Project MITHI aims to support communities in addressing both environmental and economic challenges.

“Project MITHI is about creating impact that lasts beyond a single activity,” said Nikki Lizares, Sustainability Head of Security Bank. She added that the bank’s 75th anniversary provides an opportunity to contribute to communities through initiatives that support both people and the environment.

For Security Bank, mangrove restoration, environmental education, and financial literacy are part of a broader effort to help coastal communities build long-term resilience.

Mangroves and Climate Resilience in Coastal Communities

Luna Mayor Gary Pinzon highlighted the importance of mangrove rehabilitation in strengthening environmental protection and climate resilience in coastal areas.

He also recognized the contributions of volunteers and partner organizations, emphasizing that protecting the environment requires continued participation from different sectors of the community.

The planting activity also demonstrated the importance of maintaining mangroves after seedlings are planted. Long-term rehabilitation depends on regular monitoring, maintenance, and community involvement.

“Mangrove rehabilitation is a long-term investment in both nature and communities,” said Angela Mariz Obsina, Project Lead of MITHI from Oceanus Conservation.

According to Obsina, local residents play an important role in monitoring and caring for newly planted seedlings because they understand the benefits that healthy mangrove ecosystems can provide to their communities.

A Long-Term Approach to Mangrove Rehabilitation

Project MITHI is a partnership between Security Bank, Oceanus Conservation, and Communities for Nature. The initiative supports mangrove rehabilitation, biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and inclusive community development in coastal communities across the Philippines.

Now in its second year, the program forms part of Security Bank’s broader sustainability initiatives. Its 7,500-mangrove target for the year adds another milestone to the bank’s environmental efforts as it celebrates 75 years of operations.

For communities such as Luna, mangrove rehabilitation can provide environmental benefits that extend beyond the planting activity itself. Continued local participation, education, and ecosystem management remain important to ensuring that newly planted mangroves have the opportunity to grow and contribute to healthier coastal environments.
