Tim Sendelbach will lead the regional organization as it integrates the Wauwatosa and West Allis fire departments

WEST ALLIS, Wis. — Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue today announced the appointment of Tim Sendelbach as fire chief. Sendelbach, a longtime fire service leader, will oversee the organization as it implements the merger of the Wauwatosa and West Allis fire departments and expands regional services.

Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue highlighted Sendelbach’s extensive experience in executive leadership as a critical factor in the organization’s next steps in developing a coordinated regional model.

“Chief Sendelbach’s appointment reflects the level of leadership Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue aims to establish during the merger process,” said Aletha Champine, MMFR commission president. “His experience in firefighter safety, organizational performance and operational management will assist the organization in developing a coordinated regional model.”

Sendelbach shared his appreciation at the opportunity to serve Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue at this point in its development: “The merger allows the partner departments to combine capabilities and further support frontline personnel while establishing consistent, accountable and safety‑focused emergency services.”

Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue was formed through the merger of the Wauwatosa and West Allis fire departments and operates within a shared-services agreement that includes 14 departments across Milwaukee County. The organization said the merger is intended to improve operational coordination, financial sustainability and consistency in emergency response.

Sendelbach has more than 40 years of fire service experience in multiple states, including service as a chief officer, work with regional fire protection districts and experience in private-sector leadership roles, including editorial and conference roles with fire service media organizations.

Most recently, Sendelbach served as chief of the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority in Colorado from October 2021 until March 2026. In January, the authority board placed him on paid leave and later initiated proceedings to terminate his contract. The actions prompted broad support for Sendelbach from department personnel, with many LFRA members signing a petition seeking his reinstatement. Some residents organized rallies, circulated a petition and launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover his legal expenses. The firefighters union also expressed support for Sendelbach and issued a vote of no confidence in the board. Sendelbach disputed the board’s allegations, and the two sides ultimately reached a joint separation agreement.

“While the last six months have been trying, I’m excited and honored to join MMFR as their chief and put forth the same passion and commitment to achieving the goals set forth for both the department and our members,” Sendelbach told FireRescue1.
