Shirō Hamaguchi's song Chant de l'Oignon is an orchestral arrangement of the old French military song Chanson de l'Oignon, or Song of the Onion. The tune dates to the era of the French Revolution and Napoleon, with the French Ministry of the Armed Forces tracing its melody to Étienne Méhul's 1797 opera La chasse du jeune Henri. The humorous lyrics praise fried onions as food capable of turning soldiers into lions, before the chorus launches into a spirited marching refrain. Tradition associates the song with Napoleon's grenadiers and the Battle of Marengo in 1800. According to the longstanding story, Bonaparte encountered soldiers rubbing onions on their bread and remarked that nothing was better for marching "on the road to glory." The exact origin of the song is uncertain, so consider this military folklore rather than established historical fact. Japanese composer and arranger Shirō Hamaguchi adapted Chant de l'Oignon for the anime film series Girls und Panzer das Finale, where it serves as music associated with the French themed BC Freedom Academy. The choice is particularly fitting because the series builds much of its musical identity around historical military tunes connected with the national inspirations of its different schools. The Hamaguchi arrangement turns the old marching song into a bright, theatrical piece of soundtrack music while retaining its unmistakably French military character.
