Mr Gove, now editor of The Spectator, was elected to Parliament in 2005 and joined David Cameron's shadow cabinet. He became education secretary in 2010 and held several cabinet roles until stepping down at the 2024 general election. It is traditional for prime ministers to award peerages and other gongs upon their resignation from office - with key political allies, donors and staff often rewarded.
