Is the forest really the ideal home for wildlife? Filmmaker Jan Haft returns to the German woods of his childhood and into the Bavarian Forest National Park, where storms, bark beetles, wolves and lynx are rewriting the rules. Rare beetles reappear, capercaillie court in the snow and glowing fungus gnat larvae spin their nets in the dark. Which species truly belong to the dense forest? Welcome to the Forest is a 4K nature documentary series exploring Germany’s forests, from managed plantations to protected national parks. In this episode, we follow red deer, hazel grouse, pygmy owls, wood ants, honeybees and the tau emperor caterpillar through the seasons of the Bavarian Forest and the Hainich, Germany’s largest unbroken broadleaf forest.
