The largest earthquake to ever strike in or near Yellowstone occurred on August 17th 1959. This quake forever changed the landscape in some spots, forming a new lake, causing one of the largest lower 48 landslides in historical times, and causing changes at hundreds of geothermal vents. Registering in as a magnitude 7.2, such events while rare are many times more likely in the future than any eruption of Yellowstone. Thumbnail Photo Credit: I.J.
