Dame Diana Johnson has said the government's plans to give one-off payments to employers who hire young people that have been unemployed for six months is "probably the largest package of support for young people who are out of work in a generation". Asked if this is about bringing the welfare bill down, the employment minister told Sky News: "This is about not letting a whole generation of young people lose out on the opportunity to work. "We cannot have young people not given the opportunity to earn. I want a system that's giving opportunity to people."
