A Cinematic Taste of Hong Kong — An Engaging New Chapter in Curated Cultural Experiences

Hong Kong SAR – Nestled at the water’s edge of Victoria Harbour, with a renowned city view, Forbes Five-Star Regent Hong Kong presents “A Cinematic Taste of Hong Kong — Iconic Hong Kong Dishes from the Silver Screen.” This special culinary experience celebrates Hong Kong cinema and was developed with the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild. Serving as the first part of a larger cultural initiative, it encourages guests to explore the city’s true spirit.

Regent Hong Kong at Night

Regent Hong Kong at Night

A Cinematic Taste of Hong Kong honors the subtle poetry of Hong Kong cinema, where food serves as an unspoken language conveying longing, restraint, brotherhood, tenderness, memory, and home. Every dish acts as a frame; each flavor tells a story.

The Lobby Lounge — A Harbourfront Stage

The experience takes place at The Lobby Lounge, a favored spot and a cinematic setting at Regent Hong Kong. Surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, the lounge offers views of Victoria Harbour’s dynamic scenery — from gentle morning light to sunset’s golden glow and the sparkling dance of the night skyline.

Set against this lively backdrop, each dish in A Cinematic Taste of Hong Kong is presented as a quiet dialogue with the harbor visible through the glass. In this context, the “screen” extends beyond the cinema; it becomes the city itself.

Hong Kong Movies, Composed in Taste

Curated by Executive Chef Calvin Choi and The Lobby Lounge Head Chef Raymon Ip, the menu reinterprets iconic cinematic moments through cuisine, emphasizing craftsmanship, memory, and a subtle luxury uniquely Hong Kong.

Tradition. Sincerity. Craft.

This elevated version of a recurring on-screen favorite showcases handcrafted lobster and prawn wontons, delivering a sweet and delicate bite. The soup, made with dried flounder broth and infused with lobster oil, offers a silky and aromatic richness. Paired with springy noodles, it presents a sophisticated take on a classic Hong Kong dish.

Char Siu Egg Rice – HK$388

Brotherhood. Acceptance. Resilience amid chaos.

Inspired by a beloved Kowloon Walled City dish — char siu rice topped with a hat — and captured during a spontaneous moment of tenderness in a 2024 action epic. House-roasted Spanish Ibérico pork collar provides tender, smoky richness, while rice mixed with applewood-smoked bacon oil adds delicate depth. A crisp, free-range Italian Montagna egg and fragrant French chives adorn the dish, finished with homemade soy sauce for a comforting yet luxurious flavor.

Exuberance. Invention. Hong Kong wit.

This dish offers a refined tribute to Hong Kong cinema’s playful spirit, featuring the iconic “exploding” beef balls, now made with premium Black Angus and mantis shrimp. Crafted for a crisp, satisfying bite, they are served in a rich beef bone marrow broth, topped with Chinese celery, fried shallots, and scallions. It’s a comforting bowl rooted in simplicity, craftsmanship, and nostalgia.

Love as quiet sacrifice.

“Hong Kong” Style French Toast · A Tribute to Hong Kong Cinema – HK$158

Local rhythm. Nostalgia. The pause within the city’s pace.

This French toast, resembling a golden, syrup-glazed icon of cha chaan teng romance, evokes slow café moments perfect for confessions, connections, and tender love. Soft bread is layered with crunchy peanut butter and coated in crushed cornflakes for added crispiness. It’s complemented by French Bordier butter blended with salted egg yolk, imparting a rich, savory-sweet flavor, and finished with a drizzle of local honey for a gentle, floral touch.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Soi Cheang, a renowned film director and President of the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild, comments: “Hong Kong cinema is not solely about its heroes — it lives within quiet, human moments: a father and son sharing char siu rice, two lovers enjoying wonton noodles in silence, the comfort of a meal after a long day. In our films, food transcends mere sustenance; it embodies memory, identity, and the gentle heartbeat of a city that keeps dreaming. Witnessing these stories being honored through such meticulous craftsmanship feels appropriate — after all, cinema and cuisine are fundamentally similar art forms: of timing, patience, and soul.”

The Opening Frame of a Wider Vision

A Cinematic Taste of Hong Kong represents the initial expression of A Curated Cultural Experience — Regent Hong Kong’s ongoing vision, which transforms its cinematic storytelling from mere images into an immersive experience.

For years, the hotel has embodied the Regent Story, a visual narrative inspired by cinema photography, with each shot carefully crafted to evoke a mood and capture a moment. Now, this approach extends beyond the camera into the guest’s experience. The story is no longer just observed; it is tasted, felt, and subtly experienced—an fusion of culture, cuisine, and sensory rituals that unfold smoothly.

This cinematic thread is deeply woven into Regent Hong Kong’s history. The hotel has featured in international productions like Noble House (1988), Nightwatch (1995), and the US TV series Dynasty (1985), which helps maintain its timeless, expressive, and cinematic reputation.

Humble Luxury — A Defining Philosophy

Regent Hong Kong has always held that genuine luxury doesn’t need to be proclaimed; it is something felt. It resides in the calm of the harbor at sunset, in the subtle perfection of a Michelin-starred restaurant, and in the thoughtful, unobtrusive service that anticipates guests’ needs. Instead of depending on typical luxury trademarks, the hotel creates personalized experiences that showcase Hong Kong’s authentic spirit, centered around three key themes: Harbor, Cinema, and Culture.

A Glimpse of What Lies Ahead

Beyond a cinematic glimpse of Hong Kong, the curated cultural experience will include a series of initiatives focused on local art and wellness. These range from custom mahjong tile painting with local artists, private kung fu lessons led by master practitioners, to evening sensory rituals that transition from the city’s vibrant energy to the hotel’s peaceful harborfront atmosphere. Each activity provides an intimate view of the stories, skills, and nuances that define Hong Kong’s character.

Action, Reimagined

In collaboration with esteemed martial arts professionals and action experts, guests can experience the movement, discipline, and artistry central to Hong Kong’s martial arts cinema. These exclusive guided sessions draw on choreography, technique, and cinematic language that have shaped action films globally, while honoring the city’s lasting influence on the genre.

The Art of Mahjong — Where Tradition Meets Contemporary Craft

Under the guidance of local artisans, guests can design and hand-paint a personalized mahjong tile or set, creating a tactile keepsake that connects heritage with modern creativity. As an element of intangible cultural heritage, this craft reflects Hong Kong’s social rituals and vibrant visual culture.

The Poetry of Ink — Chinese Calligraphy

The Poetry of Ink by Regent Hong KongThe Poetry of Ink by Regent Hong Kong

Guests can partake in a meditative introduction to Chinese ink and brushwork through collaborations with contemporary calligraphers and designers. These sessions go beyond mere technique, encouraging stillness and a quiet engagement with the city’s aesthetic essence. Each of these personalized experiences can be arranged on request, serving as a bespoke extension of a stay at Regent Hong Kong—an inviting step into the city’s cinematic core, one thoughtfully crafted moment at a time.
