A major earthquake has triggered an explosive eruption of a volcano with no historical eruptions on record. This could easily progress into a major flank eruption, with the theoretical potential to create a vast lava field along a lengthy magma dike. Today's video discusses the new eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano, which much like Mount Fuji in 1707, was triggered to erupt by a megathrust earthquake. Thumbnail Photo Credit: Schaefer, J. R. G., Alaska Volcano Observatory / Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, https://avo.alaska.edu/image/view/84171. This image was overlaid with text, and then overlaid with GeologyHub made graphics (the image border & the GeologyHub logo). Note: While this video's thumbnail image shows the more explosive 2008 eruption of the Okmok volcano in Alaska, it looks vaguely similar to the ongoing eruption plume.
