There is also a detailed description of the endemic plants and insects living in the high-altitude lava fields and how continuous volcanic eruptions allow the mineral world to be colonized by living beings. A million years ago, Italy was a battlefield where enormous, violent volcanoes raised mountains and erased valleys, in a world with no room for plants or animals.
