A series of "lava tornadoes" (not true tornadoes but strong whirlwinds) occurred within Kilauea's summit caldera on June 14th as the volcano produced its 49th episode of tall lava fountaining. This lava fountaining provided the heat necessary for rotation to occur, and in total 5 million cubic meters of molten rock was emplaced in a 7.5 hour timespan.
