The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has unveiled a new Transport Vision, proposing a high-capacity mass transit network that would connect Bristol to its airport.

Bristol Airport is one of the busiest airports in the UK without a direct train or tram link. It lies around 16km outside of Bristol city centre, with passengers having to get there via the often-busy road network.

To make this journey and others around the city more seamless, WECA has unveiled its Transport Vision, which outlines proposals to start building a mass transit system within four or five years. The system will include an interconnected network comprising buses, rail, mass transit, upgraded streets, and active travel improvements such as better walking and cycling routes.

According to WECA, congestion in Bath and Bristol cost the local economy more than £150m in 2025; it is hoped that better, more interconnected transport will lead to investment, create jobs, boost productivity and drive economic growth.

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, said: “We need a transport system that people can trust, wherever they live. Together, we can and must deliver the integrated transport system that people need and deserve. As we lay the foundations with existing transport projects, and step things up a gear for better buses, more trains, and mass transit plans, we will seek our fair share of further funding to really get the West moving.”

A key part of the vision is installation of mass transit services, such as tram or light rail-style vehicles that operate at high frequencies along dedicated routes. According to WECA, the West is currently the UK’s biggest city region without such a service. The Transport Vision includes first concepts for a tram or light railway linking Bristol with Bristol Airport.

Councillor Tony Dyer, leader of Bristol City Council, said: “Bristol continues to punch above its weight culturally and economically, yet we are still crying out for real, sustained investment into our transport system. Through this plan, we can take the first steps to delivering the modern, reliable, and future proofed transport network, which includes a mass transit system, that our residents deserve and continue to unlock the full potential of our city centre and the wider region.”

Councillor Hugh Malyan, Cabinet member for highways and transport at North Somerset Council, said: “Getting around shouldn’t be a daily struggle. Investment in better buses, safer walking and cycling routes, improved rail links and well-maintained roads across the region will make every day journeys easier for people in North Somerset.”

WECA also said that, following the Transport Vision’s publication, it will develop a transport strategy outlining the infrastructure needed to fulfil its ambitions.
